Price for profit, not just sales

How to calculate a profitable selling price

A product can look profitable until you include the costs around it. A dress bought for KSh 1,500 may also need KSh 80 packaging, KSh 150 delivery support, and a payment fee. Those costs reduce what you actually keep, so they belong in your selling-price calculation.

This calculator uses profit margin rather than a simple markup. Margin shows the share of the selling price left after the costs entered. If you need a 30% margin, you cannot simply add 30% to your cost: the correct price must leave 30% of the final sale amount after costs and payment fees.

Include costs you absorb

Include packaging, free delivery, transaction fees, marketplace commission, and a sensible allowance for waste or returns. Add a share of regular overheads as an Other cost per sale when needed.

Keep VAT separate

If your business charges VAT, use the optional VAT setting. It adds VAT to the customer-facing price but does not inflate your calculated profit.

Product pricing and profit margin questions

Add every direct cost for one sale, then divide that total by one minus your target margin and any payment fee percentage. For example, a KSh 1,000 total cost, a 30% margin, and a 0.5% payment fee needs a price of about KSh 1,438.85 before VAT.
