Filed monthly, not annually
TOT returns and payment are due every month, by the 20th of the following month, on iTax - closer to how VAT works than standard annual income tax.

A tax on sales, not profit
Most sellers think about tax in terms of profit - what is left after stock, rent, and other costs. Turnover Tax works differently: it is charged on your total gross sales, with no deduction for any business expense. A business running on thin margins can still owe a meaningful TOT bill even in a month where profit was small.
TOT applies to resident businesses with an annual turnover between KSh 1,000,000 and KSh 25,000,000, at a standard rate of 1.5% following the Finance Act 2023. Turnover below KSh 1,000,000 is exempt, and turnover above KSh 25,000,000 must be taxed under the standard income tax regime instead - so where your business sits on that scale genuinely changes which rules apply.

The rate changed to 1.5% under the Finance Act 2023, and the upper threshold moved down to KSh 25 million. Treat the numbers here as a snapshot and confirm the current rate before you file.
For LinkDuka sellers
TOT and VAT apply in different situations, and the right one for your business depends on your turnover and what you sell. If you are close to either threshold, check both calculators and confirm your specific position with KRA or a tax advisor before you register.
Turnover Tax is a tax charged on the gross sales of small and medium businesses, in place of standard income tax. It applies to resident businesses with an annual turnover between KSh 1,000,000 and KSh 25,000,000. Unlike income tax, no business expenses are deducted - the tax is charged on total sales.
