Two percentages, one profit

Margin and markup are not the same number

Margin is your profit measured against the selling price - it tells you what share of every shilling a customer pays is actual profit. Markup is your profit measured against the cost price - it tells you how much you added on top of what you paid.

Mixing the two up is one of the most common pricing mistakes small businesses make. A trader aiming for a 40% profit who applies a 40% markup ends up with only a 28.6% margin - not the 40% they thought they were protecting.

Margin

Profit รท selling price ร— 100. Always lower than markup on the same sale. Best for comparing profitability across products or against your target take-home percentage.

Markup

Profit รท cost price ร— 100. Always higher than margin on the same sale. Best for working out exactly what to add to a cost price when you set a shelf price.

For LinkDuka sellers

Turn a target margin into a real price

Once you know the price that hits your target margin or markup, put it straight to work: set it as your product price, or run it through the full pricing calculator to also account for packaging, delivery, and payment fees.

Margin vs markup questions

Margin is your profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is your profit as a percentage of what the item cost you. On the same sale, markup is always a higher number than margin - for example, a 30% margin is the same profit as a 42.9% markup.
