How it works

How M-Pesa charges are calculated

M-Pesa charges depend on the transaction type and amount band. Each band has a listed fee. Pay Bill charges also depend on the arrangement chosen by the business, and Safaricom may change rates over time.

Sending money costs more as the amount grows

Send Money and Pay Bill have different tariff tables. Select the transaction type that matches how you plan to pay.

Buy Goods (Till) generally has no customer fee

Buy Goods payments generally have no customer fee. Safaricom lists fuel-station payments as an exception, and merchants may pay collection fees.

Withdrawals cost more than sending

Cashing out at an agent or ATM is generally more expensive than sending the same amount to another M-Pesa number, since cash withdrawal moves money out of the mobile money system entirely.

Confirm the final charge

The calculator uses the listed transaction charge. Check the final amount shown in your M-Pesa app or menu before you confirm.

For sellers

Turn this into cheaper sales for your business

If you sell products or services, how your customer pays you changes what it costs them - and that can affect whether they complete the sale:

  • Compare a Till with a personal number. Asking a customer to send money to your personal M-Pesa number can cost them a fee. A business Till generally has no customer fee, though merchant fees may apply.
  • Be upfront about who pays a Pay Bill charge. If you use a Pay Bill number, decide whether you or your customer covers the fee, and say so clearly to avoid disputes over the amount received.
  • Show the total cost upfront. Add your payment details to a free LinkDuka invoice so customers know exactly how and where to pay before they buy.

Create a LinkDuka shop to list products and manage orders. Check which payment methods are available for your shop before promising customers a particular checkout option.

M-Pesa charges questions

Sending KES 4,000 to another M-Pesa number costs KES 57, because 4,000 sits in the 3,501-5,000 send-money band. The recipient gets the full KES 4,000 and KES 4,057 leaves your account. Paying KES 4,000 to a Pay Bill where the customer pays the fee costs KES 34. Safaricom can change its rates, so confirm the fee shown in your M-Pesa app.
